Above and beyond its original motivations, the Born-Infeld theory plays an important role in connection with partial SUSY breaking. It also emerges naturally in String Theory, and its field equations afford an intriguing generalization of electric-magnetic duality to an interacting system. I shall elaborate on two types of Abelian multi-field extensions. The first is related to partial breaking and rests on the Antoniadis-Partouche-Taylor construction, while the second is related to dualities and rests on the Ivanov-Zupnik method. |
