Résumé |
Recent experiments have broken the myth related to the unpredictability of power-law distributed avalanches in slowly driven systems. This idea of unpredictability has been a consequence of the mapping between critical phenomena and slowly driven systems evolving through scale invariant avalanches, developed by the Self-organized criticality (SOC). In the seminar both experiments and simulations where prediction has been achieved will be presented. The mapping mentioned above, which contains the basis of the SOC ideas, will be also revised [O. Ramos et al., PRL (2009); O. Ramos, Tectonophysics (in press)]. |
