Titre | Instanton Operators and the Higgs branch at Infinite Coupling. |
Résumé | Standard lore says that the Higgs branch of a gauge theory with 8 supercharges is classically exact and there are no quantum corrections in dimensions 3 to 6. In this talk we are going to correct this statement, at least for 5 dimensions, and discuss cases where at infinite coupling there is a larger Higgs branch. In some dramatic cases, a new Higgs branch opens up as one tunes the coupling to infinity, and in others, it grows. The main tool is going to be a new set of chiral operators, called instanton operators, which become massless at infinite coupling, and mix with the usual chiral operators on the Higgs branch - mesons, and the much less discussed, gaugino bilinear. By analogy to Coulomb branches in three dimensions with this amount of supersymmetry, which due to recent progress are now characterized as spaces of dressed monopole operators, we are now thinking of the Higgs branch of 5 dimensions as the space of dressed instanton operators. The analysis uses representation theory to derive the chiral ring relations that the instanton operators satisfy, making a prediction to the fixed point that lies at infinite coupling. |
