Many heterotic orbifolds have massless particles with both E8_1 and E8_2 charges. In the M-theory dual of
the heterotic string, this poses a paradox, since the E8_1 and the E8_2 live at opposite ends of the 11th
dimension. But besides the two 10D E8 gauge theories, the orbifold has several 5D SCFTs living on the fixed
planes of the orbofold. I use dimensional deconstruction to investigate the low-energy dynamics of such an
SCFT and its interaction with the boundary fields. In this picture, the massless particles with both E8_1 and
E8_2 charges emerge as non-local mesons, comprised of an E8_1 -charged quark at one end of the 11th
dimension, an E8_2 -charged antiquark at the other end, and a tensionless string of 5D gluons spanning the
entire 11th dimension to connect the quark to the antiquark. |
