A supersymmetric supergravity backgrounds has an associated Lie superalgebra generated by the Killing
spinors: the Killing superalgebra, which is a useful invariant of the supergravity background. I will describe
the algebraic structure of such Killing superalgebras and two immediate applications of this fact: 1) the
classification of supersymmetric supergravity backgrounds and 2) the determination of geometries admitting
rigidly supersymmetric field theories. This is joint work with Paul de Medeiros and Andrea Santi.
