Nonlinear sigma models in 2d, theta-terms, anomaly matching and lattice field theory |
Résumé |
I will discuss bosonic nonlinear sigma models in 2d, specifically focusing on the CP(N-1) and flag-manifold target space. These models allow theta-terms. I will show that interesting anomaly matching conditions exist for these models at specific values of theta, allowing rigorous predictions about the phase-diagram of the models. If time permits, I will also discuss numerical studies of such systems. The theta-term typically introduces the complex-action problem, prohibiting Monte Carlo simulations from first-principles. This complex-action problem can be overcome however by proper re-formulation of the theory on the lattice, and subsequent dualization. The approach leads to some beautiful results in higher dimensions as well, such as natural definition of magnetically charged matter and KramersWannier duality in 4d. |
