Titre | Optically-Active Magnetic Edge-States in Phosphorene Nanoribbons |
Résumé | Room-temperature ferromagnetic semiconductors offer a viable route to non-volatile digital logic where states can be held without the help of an external driving voltage, drastically lowering the power consumption of electronic circuits [1]. Thus far the search for semiconducting ferromagnets has been dominated by magnetically doped semiconductors where the semiconducting and magnetic properties often exist independently and if coupled, only at low temperatures. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials particularly in their few to monolayer limit offer a potentially different route to semiconducting ferromagnetism due to their unique electronic structures [2]. In this talk I will discuss our discovery of the existence of strong room-temperature ferromagnetic correlations along the zigzag edge of semiconducting phosphorene nanoribbons (zPNRs) [3]. I will demonstrate how we can map the magnetic phase diagram of zPNRs to evidence Curie temperature in excess of 350 K and signatures of an antiferromagnetic phase transition at 70 K. By manipulating the ribbon orientation using sub- 1T fields I will further discuss how the ultrafast dipolar dynamics of both in- and out-of-plane excited state electronic transitions can be tracked and the importance of specific phonon modes in controlling magnetism in low dimensions. If time allows, I will briefly show case new methods we are developing to image carrier dynamics in layered materials. |
