Titre | A closed clockwork theory |
Résumé | The clockwork mechanism is a relatively new mechanism to generate suppressed couplings in a theory containing no small parameters. In this talk I will begin with a brief overview of the mechanism as it unfolds in the original class of theories, involving $N$ copies of a field theory of any spin with near- neighbour interactions along a one dimensional {\em open} chain, and how it links to a 5D theory embedded in a linear dilaton background in the large $N$ limit. Further, I will introduce a new class of clockwork theories with near-neighbour interactions along a {\em closed} chain. In addition to inheriting the same hierarchy generating mechanism, the new theory presents attractive features like a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry under an exchange of fields resulting in a physical spectrum of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ even and odd states with degenerate masses at each level. This renders the lightest odd state absolutely stable. Evidently, this new clockwork theory, too, can be obtained as a deconstruction of a 5D theory in a modified linear dilaton geometry. |
