Titre | Single crystal elasticity measurements at extreme conditions |
Résumé | Single-crystal elastic properties of materials are important not only for solid-state physics as the reflectors of fundamental inter-atomic interactions, but also for the Earth sciences. Explanations of many fine seismic topological features and anisotropy observations require single-crystal elastic constants of minerals at high pressures and temperatures. Recent developments of three main experimental techniques for measuring individual Cij at extreme conditions are presented. The techniques are: acoustic GHz-frequency interferometry, energy-resolved inelastic X-ray scattering, and Brillouin scattering. All of them are capable now for simultaneous high pressure and temperature experiments, which are necessarily to investigate geologically relevant materials or refining pressure calibration standards. |
