Titre | Synthesis of ultrahard nano-polycrystalline diamond at high pressure: physical properties and potential applications |
Résumé | Since we reported the first synthesis of ultrahard nano-polycrystalline diamond (NPD or HIME-diamond) by direct conversion of graphite at high pressure and temperature (Irifune et al., Nature, 421, 599, 2003), we have been working to synthesize NPD with larger dimensions and of better quality for industrial and scientific applications. We are now able to synthesize NPD rods of up to ~7 mm in both diameter and length with no visible cracks and impurities on a routine basis, and planning to synthesize those of ~1 cm using the newly constructed 6000-ton multianvil apparatus (BOTCHAN-6000) at GRC for applications to various types of high-pressure apparatus. In this talk, I will review the synthesis conditions and some physical properties of NPD, such as microstructures, hardness, elastic and optical properties, etc. I will alsoreport some preliminary results on high-pressure generation using NPD anvils for 6-8-2 type multianvil apparatus and laser heated diamond anvil cell. |
