Titre | Dilatancy onset in sand |
Résumé | Dilatancy onset refers to the separation between the low-density states of a granular material, which contract under infinitesimal shear, from the high-density states, which expand. In this talk I will describe a model of sand, using a volume/strain ensemble, which predicts that this onset occurs at a sharply-defined density, and in fact represents a (continuous) phase transition in the usual sense of statistical physics. I will also discuss indirect experimental evidence, concerning elastic shear constants, which seems to confirm this. |
