Titre | Global gravitational anomaly cancellation for five-branes |
Résumé | The cancellation of global anomalies is a subtle consistency constraint on string theory, M-theory and their various effective descriptions. We will use recent results about the global gravitational anomaly of the self-dual field to show the cancellation of global anomalies for five-branes. Along the way, we solve a puzzle concerning worldvolume couplings on defects involving the gauge field they source magnetically. We will also mention some partial results concerning the global gravitational anomaly of (2,0) theories, and their implication for the associated field theories obtained by compactification.
